Right now I'm reading Ally Condie's Crossed. Her writing is so fluid and beautiful and poetic, and she's really good at getting inside her characters heads, which I enjoy immensely. The setting is patterned after Southern Utah, which is one of my family's favorite mini vacation destinations. It reminds me of all the canyons we've hiked and the indian ruins and rock art we've seen over the years.
I'm also listening to Jame's Dashner's Scorch Trials on audio book while I exercise and clean my house. His descriptions and the things his characters say and do frequently make me laugh out loud. I was drawn into the story right from the beginning. The characters and setting are so unique and yet he describes them so well they seem real. You never know what's going to happen next. It's a real page turner. I don't want to stop listening, so I'm getting a lot of exercise and cleaning done. I can't wait until the first Maze runner movie comes out in 2013!
Because I live in Utah, I'm fortunate to know both of these authors and see them at conferences and book signings. James promised me an interview for my writer's group podcast writing snippets. I need to get those questions to him asap. So look for his interview soon at www.writingsnippets.com.
I'm also reading Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand with my husband. It's an amazing true story about an Olympic runner who becomes prisoner of war in Japan and the horrible things he goes through and how he survives.
So what are you reading? I'd love to know and anyone who comments on this post will be eligible to win a copy of one of these amazing books! The winner will be announced Jan. 23rd. Best of luck to everyone.
Wow, Alice, I am a fan of these three authors and would love to win their books. I have, in my reading pile, Sarah Dressen books. Also books on Morocco.
ReplyDeleteJewel, you are the first entry in the contest. I have a Sarah Dessen book on my shelf to be read too. Are you doing research on Morocco for a book?
ReplyDeleteI just read the first two Maze Runner books and really liked them. Right now I am in a Jane Austen phase, probably because I got a lot of her collection for free on Kindle.
ReplyDeleteI love Jane Austin's books. Believe it or not, I've read them all but Pride and Prejudice.
ReplyDeleteCrossed, along with her others, is on my wish list! I'm currently reading Thirteen Reasons Why, David Copperfield, and This Glittering World. I love all three.
ReplyDeleteApril, Perfect! I wish you luck winning Crossed. I've never read David Copperfield, but have always wanted to. I better put that one on my long list of books to read.
ReplyDeleteHey there :) Alright...I'm reading School of Fear (so good.) myself. I'm reading Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat (excellent) to my two oldest boys at bedtime and I'm reading Ella Enchanted (of course, brilliant) to the family. Wooh.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy James Dashners stories though I haven't read The Scorched Trails yet I've heard a lot of good things. I've heard mixed reviews about Crossed so I'm interested in hearing your opinion of it at the end. Happy reading!!!

DeleteErin, sounds like a good mix of books to be reading. I remember those days of reading books to my kids and kind of miss it. You win the mommy of the year award in my book for all the crafts and cooking and sewing and fun things you do with your kids. And on top of all that you find time to write!
ReplyDeleteThe cover of Crossed... just makes it look like a good book. (So much for not judging a book by its cover :P) Definitely putting it on my TBR list!
ReplyDeleteI'll put you down for crossed then if you win. It is a cool cover.
DeleteRight now, I'm still trying to force myself to read Persuasion by Jane Austen. If that fails, I have to finish critting a novel by one of my blogging friends. Thanks for stopping by at one of my blogs. :-)
ReplyDeleteMisha, You're the second person who commented that's reading Jane Austin right now. What a coincidence.
ReplyDeleteOMG I NEED to start the Maze Runner series!!! I've heard nothing but good about it!!! Anyway I REALLY enjoyed Matched because it was just an amazingly unique dystopian. I agree with you about her writing it is very lyrical! I would love to win Crossed :) Also I love the simplicity of the covers!!

DeleteMaze Runner is great. I think you'll like it.
DeleteI'm reading the non-fiction work Area 51 by Annie Jacobsen. Now that many of the men who worked there are retired, they're talking about what went on. One casual statement was that when of the pilots flew over the area, he would occasionally notice a new crater. He knew that meant another underground nuclear test had occurred, collapsing the ground above.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a really interesting book. If you like nonfiction you'd probably like Unbroken if you haven't read it yet.
ReplyDeleteI always think I should read Crossed and then I forget about Ally Condie's books until just now, when I see that you are enjoying it. Going to put it on my TBR pile.....have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteThey're definitely worth reading.
DeleteThose are great books! Thanks for stopping by my blog. I'm your newest follower!
ReplyDeleteNice to have you stop by. Have you read the books yet?
DeleteI have Crossed, but I haven't gotten the chance to read it, yet. It's been a while since I've read Matched. I may need to go back and read it again. Lol
ReplyDeleteI have a lot of books I haven't read yet either. Have you read Maze Runner?
DeleteI have read Crossed and LOVED it so if I happen to win I would love to own my own copy! I hadn't read Dashner's book so that went to my TBR.
ReplyDeleteNow I had no idea they were making a movie out of the Maze Runner! That just made my day! Wow!
Never heard of that third book you mentioned. Do you recommend it to someone who rarely reads non-fiction of her own free will?
Ana @ BookSpark
I don't think they've started production on Maze Runner yet, but they may soon according to Jame's blog. Unbroken is a heart-wrenching story of suffering and forgiveness and I would recommend it to anyone. I don't read much nonfiction these days either, but this one pulled me in.
DeleteCool! I'm adding it to my TBR too (: I looked it up on Goodreads and it has some really awesome reviews. Thank you for choosing me as the winner of your giveaway!

I read Matched, so I'd like to read Crossed. You'll have to let me know how it is. I've also heard a lot about the Maze Runner series, but haven't read that either. More books for my must read list. It's getting long.
ReplyDeleteI'll review Crossed and Scorch Trials on my blog when I'm done reading them. My list is getting long too!
DeleteI've been wanting to read Crossed. I listened to parts of Unbroken on audio tape (my husband had it in his car). What I heard was heartbreaking. Right now I'm reading Elizabeth by Margaret George.
ReplyDeleteOkay. I'll put you down for Crossed. Good luck!
DeleteI met Ally Condie at a book signing and she figured out that we are related! I was so thrilled. It is my claim to literary fame. :) I'd love Scorch Trials, I only have Maze Runner so far.
ReplyDeleteThat's so cool that you're related to Ally. I'll put you down for Scorch Trials
DeleteAll of these books sound fabulous! And none of them are books I would normally pick up. I'm on a Southwest kick right now after reading about Georgia O'Keefe. :)
ReplyDeleteI just finished reading The Black Hawk by Joanna Bourne (one of my fave authors). She writes historical romance, and this one is set in France during the revolution and features spies on opposite sides who fall in love. Let the games begin, right? :)
Black Hawk sounds good, though not normally the kind of book I would read. I guess it's good to expand our horizons a little and try something new!
DeleteI know your contest is closed, but I'm going to answer anyway. I'm reading a book from another Utah author that I love-- Brandon Sanderson. The book is ALLOY OF LAW, and I am savoring it!
ReplyDeleteBrandon is awesome! I took a novel writing class from him and have read some of his books. I have others on my shelf to be read. I haven't yet read Alloy of Law, but it will go on my list. Thanks for sharing. I'll have more book give aways in the future.
ReplyDeleteI just finished Matched. How are you liking Crossed? And I love James Dashner's books. He's such a nice guy.
ReplyDeleteI like your blog--I'm your newest follower.
Hi Christy, welcome. How did you like Matched? I'm liking Crossed so far and getting near the end. I can't figure out what's going to happen and that's always a good thing. James is great. I finished Scorch Trials today. I'm planning on getting a signed copy of one of his books at an upcoming conference and doing another give away.
